Jones County Junior College Jones County Junior College provides a valuable service for the community at Smith County Adult Education Center, located in the old National Guard Armory building (also known as the Summerland Voting Precinct) on Highway 28 East in Taylorsville. (601-785-6602)
FREE classes are available to help adults improve their reading, math, and language skills. With gasoline prices so high, it’s great to know that people can attend ABE (Adult Basic Education) classes AND even take the Official GED Tests locally.
These same classes are helpful for those wishing to prepare for the ACT or pre-employment testing.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS?
- Enrollment begins with a phone call or drop-in visit to the Smith County Adult Education Center on a Monday or Tuesday, preferably between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM, to schedule a time for registration and assessment.
- Soon after enrollment, the student takes a diagnostic test to determine his specific areas of strength and weakness in reading, math, and / or language.
- The teacher assigns the appropriate lessons to be worked at the student’s own pace.
- Instruction may include group participation, one-on-one with instructor, books / workbooks, and lessons on the computer.
- After 40-50 hours of class attendance and instruction, the student will be tested again to see whether these skills have been mastered.
- At that time, he will either be assigned any additional lessons needed in that subject, lessons in another subject, or specific preparation for the GED Tests, if applicable.
- Completion of the class is determined by the diagnostic testing that indicates a student has advanced at least one skill level.
